Consuming fish oil could speed up mental performance: study
A study has found that taking DHA-rich fish oil improves blood flow to the brain during mental activity and helps eliminate mental fatigue in young adults.
In the first of two studies done in Northumbria University and published in the online edition of the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that 18-35-year-olds taking either of two different types of fish oil supplement with omega-3 for three months resulted in no consistent impact on mental function. Evidence of reduced mental fatigue and faster reaction times, however, did occur.
These results suggest that supplementing one’s diet with omega-3 or fish oil may not actually produce an immediate or measureable impact on mental performance in healthy young adults, perhaps because this population is already performing at its mental peak, or because higher doses or a longer testing period are needed.
The second of these studies showed that consuming DHA-rich fish oil for three months did boost blood flow to active areas of the brain during performance of similar mental activities.
"These findings could have implications for mental function later on in life,” lead researcher Dr Philippa Jackson pointed out.
Said findings could be significant for attaining better mental function later in life, as evidence suggests that regularly consuming oily fish or omega-3 supplements may put off cognitive decline and dementia, and better blood flow to the brain may be how this happens, the researchers claim.
Researchers are consequently now intending to investigate this effect in people aged 50-70, to review the effects of a fish oil supplement on their memory, mental performance and blood flow to the brain.
“If we can pinpoint both the behavioural and brain blood flow effects of this fatty acid in older healthy people, then the benefits for those with mental degenerative conditions associated with normal ageing could be that much greater,” Jackson explained.
